In situations due to excessive decay, fracture or root canal treatment, a tooth
needs a full crown or what is more commonly known as a "cap". The tooth is
prepared after an impression is taken and sent to the laboratory to make
the final crown.
A temporary crown is put in place to provide aesthetics and function
while the final crown is being custom made in the lab. The crown can be made of
gold and other metal alloys or it can be covered with tooth colored
porcelain to look indistinguishable from the natural teeth surrounding it.
